Black smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel for a second consecutive day on Thursday, signaling that the cardinals in conclave had once again been unable to select a new pope.
Thousands of faithful and onlookers gathered in St. Peter’s Square, eagerly awaiting the smoke on the morning of the second day of voting by the 133 cardinal electors.
