White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney on Thursday, signaling that the 133 cardinals in conclave at the Vatican have successfully elected a new pope.

The decision was reached on the conclave’s second day of voting, officially concluding the papal selection process.

The identity of Pope Francis’s successor remains undisclosed until the customary announcement is delivered from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
