Mrs. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and representative of Esan North East II under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has voluntarily stepped down from her position. Her resignation is attributed to the PDP’s current minority status within the Assembly.

Oligbi-Edeko, who was elected as Deputy Speaker of the 8th Assembly on June 16, 2023, announced her decision in a formal speech, citing the need to uphold justice, fairness, and equity across all constituencies.

She expressed gratitude to PDP leaders and constituents for their support and the opportunity to serve, while colleagues commended her dedication, integrity, and significant contributions to the legislative process.

In a swift transition, Mr. Osamwonyi Atu (APC-Orhionmwon East) was unanimously elected as the new Deputy Speaker by fellow lawmakers.

Following her resignation, Majority Leader Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC-Esan West) moved a motion to ensure that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker be granted to Oligbi-Edeko. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Charity Airobarueghian (PDP-Ovia North East I) and was unanimously adopted by the House.
