Nigerian rapper and actor Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has triggered a heated online debate after declaring that fornication is not a sin.
The statement, posted on Sunday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, simply read: “Fornication is not a sin.” Though brief, the post quickly went viral, drawing thousands of reactions and dividing social media users.
The controversial comment sparked a flurry of discussions, with opinions sharply split. Some users supported Falz’s view, framing it as a progressive interpretation of religious texts, while others criticized it as misleading and contrary to traditional moral and religious teachings.
One user, @VeryJules, defended the rapper, writing: “He’s not chasing clout. Some Christian thinkers argue that consensual intimacy isn’t sinful, especially under New Testament teachings. They believe it reflects man-made doctrine rather than divine instruction.” However, she warned others to be cautious, adding: “Fornication is a sin.”
In contrast, @LucasMolade responded firmly: “Remove Christian from the name. Christian means Christ-like, and Christ didn’t think like this.”
Another user, @BintDija, took a jab at Falz’s personal life, commenting: “No wonder you no gree marry.”
Some, like @Silvah101, accused critics of hypocrisy: “Most of y’all are just certified hypocrites. You condemn this tweet but still engage in the same act.”
Others offered a more secular perspective. @Technnick wrote: “Sin is for religious people. Fornication may be a sin to them, but it’s a legal act in our country.”
Still, many echoed traditional views, with @Winifunds summing it up by stating: “We all wish it wasn’t, but it is. Fornication is a sin.”
As the debate continues to trend, Falz has yet to issue a follow-up statement.
