Seven prisoners broke out of the Federal Government’s Medium jail in Ilesa, Osun State, on Tuesday morning, prompting the start of a massive manhunt.
The event happened when the facility’s security was compromised by an early morning downpour.
In a statement released yesterday, Abubakar Umar, the spokesman for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), stated: “Seven inmates were able to escape due to a force majeure incident that occurred at approximately 0200 hours on Tuesday.”
He said that Sylvester Nwakuche, the Comptroller General of Corrections, had requested an immediate probe into the escape’s circumstances after the occurrence.
“The service is working closely with sister security agencies as well as community leaders to recapture the escapees and bring them back to custody.
“However, the service solicits the cooperation and support of the public in providing information that may lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates.”
He listed the NCoS response desk lines as 07087086005, 09060004598, and 08075050006.
