The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, visited him at his Port Harcourt residence alongside two other governors to discuss peace.
Speaking during a live media chat on Monday, Wike disclosed that the two governors who accompanied Fubara were from the All Progressives Congress (APC). “Yes, he came. He came with two governors and one other person. Unfortunately, the two governors are APC governors, so I won’t go after them. He said he wants peace, and I want peace too,” Wike said.
Describing Fubara’s political struggles as “self-inflicted,” Wike explained that earlier attempts to advise the embattled governor were ignored. He recalled a previous meeting with Fubara attended by prominent political figures including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
“We sat him down and said, ‘This isn’t good for you. God has given you this opportunity, so be humble and don’t let others push you around.’ They keep telling him to act like a governor – we know he is. No one is disputing that. But don’t forget those who worked tirelessly to support you,” Wike said.
On the issue of open grazing in the FCT, Wike noted the need for caution, saying that while efforts are ongoing to address the problem, it requires careful handling.
“No one is happy about it,” he said. “Governance isn’t like running a private business – you must tread carefully. For instance, land was allocated for grazing reserves before I assumed office – about 100 hectares. But now we’re facing serious resistance. Land grabbers have encroached on it, and we’re working to resolve the issue, but it must be done cautiously.”
