The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has suggested that Nigeria becoming a one-party state should not be seen as problematic so long as it reflects the will of the people.

Speaking on Friday after leading a delegation of three former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators from Kebbi State to meet President Bola Tinubu, Ganduje addressed concerns over rising defections to the ruling party. The senators Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki who formally announced their move to the APC during the visit.

Reacting to fears that such shifts could lead to a one-party system, Ganduje said, “A one-party state is not imposed. It is driven by negotiation, good governance, and the willingness of others to join.”

He cited China as an example of a thriving one-party system, adding, “Too many political parties spoil governance just like too many cooks spoil the soup.”

Ganduje emphasized that the APC is not actively working toward eliminating opposition, but argued that if more politicians choose to join the ruling party of their own accord, it should not be seen as a threat.

“If that becomes the desire of Nigerians, then so be it,” he said. “We are not forcing a one-party state, but if people see the impact of good governance and choose unity, there’s nothing wrong with that.”

He concluded by urging observers to watch developments in the chambers on Tuesday, hinting at more political shifts to come.
