Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has declared he will leave the club immediately and without compensation if the board or fans no longer support him, following Wednesday’s 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal at San Mamés sealed the win for Spurs and compounded what has been a disastrous season for United, who are set to record their worst league finish since 1974.

Speaking emotionally after the match, Amorim who replaced Erik ten Hag in November stood by his methods despite a dismal run of form that has seen United crash out of European contention.

“If the board and the fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation,” Amorim said. “But I will not quit. I’m really confident in my work. And as you can see, I won’t change the way I do things.”

The former Sporting Lisbon boss avoided commenting on his long-term future, stating the club needed time to process the pain of defeat before making any decisions.

“What I can say is that I think it was clear we were the better team,” he said. “But once again, we failed to score. It’s hard to win football matches that way, but the players gave everything.”

Amorim had taken over with United still within reach of the Champions League spots, but they now trail fifth-placed Chelsea by a staggering 27 points. Despite this, he remains focused on rebuilding.

“We need to understand how tough it is for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League,” he added. “But we have to look at the positives more time to train, to improve, and to come back stronger in the Premier League. That will be our focus.”
