Mason Mount has opened up about his difficult spell at Manchester United, marked by persistent injury setbacks, as the club prepares for the Europa League final against Tottenham.
Since joining United from Chelsea in 2023, Mount has struggled to maintain fitness, managing only 42 appearances over nearly two seasons. Despite limited game time, the midfielder made a decisive impact in the Europa League semi-final, scoring twice against Athletic Club to help secure United’s place in the final.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Mount shared his thoughts on his injury-plagued campaign and expressed hope of finishing the season on a high.
“It’s not been easy,” Mount admitted. “But I’ve stayed focused and kept the end goal in mind. I always believed a moment would come. Watching back the goals from the Athletic Club game was surreal—it all happened so fast, and I felt like I was in a flow state. Scoring twice and helping us win was a special night for me.”
Reflecting on his time sidelined, Mount added: “There were many tough days at Carrington, stuck on the treatment table when I just wanted to be training or playing. Watching from the stands was frustrating, but I gave everything to my rehab. I’ve learned a lot through these experiences and come to appreciate the game even more.”
Looking ahead to Wednesday’s European showdown, Mount spoke about his past disappointments and the hunger for success.
“The losses stay with you. I’ve had a few tough ones at Wembley, and they hurt,” he said. “But when you do win, that feeling is unmatched, you crave it. I’m not sure how many of the lads have experienced that kind of heartbreak, but I’ve had enough and I don’t want it again.”
Mount also acknowledged the team’s inconsistent domestic form but remains optimistic about their progress.
“I think we’re close. In the Premier League, it comes down to small details. If those aren’t right, you get punished. But winning trophies breeds confidence and unity. We know our league form hasn’t been good enough, and we won’t ignore that. Still, a Europa League title could turn a tough season into a positive one.”
Following the final, United will conclude their 2024-25 season at Old Trafford on Sunday against Aston Villa.
