A moment of overwhelming emotion unfolded at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, Kogi State, on Friday, when a man identified as Adamu Muhammed Tenimu collapsed upon learning that his wife had given birth to triplets.
Witnesses said Tenimu fainted shortly after being informed that his wife had delivered three baby girls. He was quickly attended to by hospital staff and sympathisers, who successfully revived him.
The mother and her newborns are reported to be in stable condition and under observation in the hospital’s neonatal unit. The babies weighed 1.8kg, 2.0kg, and 2.3kg, respectively, and are said to be responding well to care.
Speaking to journalists after regaining consciousness, Tenimu, an unemployed job seeker, expressed mixed emotions, gratitude for the safe delivery but deep concern over the family’s financial situation.
“I thank God for this miracle, but I am overwhelmed,” he said tearfully. “We were only preparing for one child. Because of financial constraints, we couldn’t afford regular scans, so the news of triplets was a shock. Now, we don’t even have money to pay the hospital bills or buy baby supplies.”
Family members and eyewitnesses have called on the government, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies, and the general public to assist the struggling family.
“The babies are healthy, but the parents urgently need support—medical supplies, baby food, and financial aid,” a relative said.
Friends and well-wishers have started a support drive, urging the Kogi State Government and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to step in.
“This man is hardworking and law-abiding. He deserves assistance in this moment of need,” said Mr. Nuhu Alhassan, a colleague.
Appeals have also been made to philanthropists and kind-hearted Nigerians to donate essentials and contribute to the family’s welfare.
“The joy of childbirth should not be dampened by the fear of survival. This family needs our collective support,” added another sympathiser, Mr. Sikiru Olamide.
