Manchester United have reaffirmed their support for head coach Ruben Amorim following his comments about potentially stepping down in the wake of the club’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
After parting ways with Erik ten Hag who previously led United to League Cup and FA Cup titles, the club appointed Portuguese coach Amorim with hopes of reviving their fortunes in the 2024-25 season. However, results have fallen short of expectations, with Amorim recording only 15 wins in 41 matches, equating to a win rate of just 36%.
United’s latest disappointment came in a narrow 1-0 loss to Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Europa League final. Speaking after the game, Amorim addressed questions about his future, saying: “If the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go tomorrow with no compensation. But I will not quit.”
In an interview with TNT Sports, he added: “I’m confident that I’m still the guy more than at the beginning. I know things will be tough. I know losing to another English team will test the fans’ patience next season. But I won’t quit. I’m here to fight.”
Despite a challenging campaign that has left United 16th in the Premier League and out of European competition for next season, Amorim continues to enjoy strong backing from the club’s ownership, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe. According to BBC Sport, the club’s stance remains unchanged: “There is no shift in Manchester United’s position following last night’s press conference. The club and ownership continue to back Ruben Amorim and believe the fans do as well.”
Supporters have continued to show vocal support for Amorim, and the 40-year-old remains under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2027.
