The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has firmly rejected allegations that it has been hijacked by political interests, including Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
The denial comes in response to accusations made by Henry Okunomu who claimed to be a former NANS Senate President during an interview on Channels Television.
Okunomu alleged that political figures were influencing the student body and pointed fingers at Seyi Tinubu’s purported involvement.
In a statement released Wednesday, NANS National Public Relations Officer Adeyemi Ajasa dismissed Okunomu’s claims as baseless.
He stated that Okunomu has never held any official role within NANS, describing his comments as deliberate misinformation and an attempt at blackmail.
Ajasa criticized media outlets for offering a platform to what he called impostors, remarking.
“It is alarming that reputable media organizations would promote false narratives aimed at undermining a legitimate student body.”
He emphasized the credibility of NANS’ leadership selection process, noting that all candidates undergo strict vetting in accordance with the association’s constitution.
The union also clarified ongoing leadership disputes, asserting that Comrade Olushola Oladoja remains the legitimate and democratically elected NANS President, countering claims that someone named Mr. Abubakr holds the position.
Reaffirming its independence, NANS stated “we are not affiliated with any political party or administration. Our advocacy is grounded solely in the welfare and rights of Nigerian students.”
The association concluded by warning against the misuse of its name for political gain.
“NANS will not tolerate any attempts by individuals or groups to exploit our platform for manipulation or blackmail.”
