Adire fabric producers in Itoku Market, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have strongly criticized Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over his recent comment alleging that the Egba people “stole” the Adire textile craft from Osun.

The governor made the claim in a viral video, stating that Adire originated from his hometown, Ede, and was later taken by the Egba people.

In response to a correction from Presidential Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, who noted Adire’s association with Ogun, Adeleke insisted, “They stole it.”

The statement triggered swift backlash from Ogun-based traders and cultural leaders, who denounced the comment as historically inaccurate and disrespectful.

Chief Somodale Akamo, Iyaloja of Kemta Adire/Kampala Market in Itoku, issued a public response on behalf of the traders, calling the remark offensive and misleading.

“Adire has deep roots in Egba culture, dating back to the 13th century,” Akamo said. “Our people preserved and promoted the craft, especially after settling in Abeokuta in 1830. Pioneers like Madam Jojoyinola helped bring global attention to Adire.”

Akamo demanded a formal apology and retraction from Governor Adeleke, labeling his statement a “direct insult to a proud and industrious community.”
