The Ogun State Government has announced a strategic partnership with Nike Art Gallery to transform the iconic Olumo Rock in Abeokuta into a major cultural and tourism hub, aiming to increase annual visitor numbers from 20,000 to over 100,000.

Governor Dapo Abiodun revealed the initiative on Wednesday during a meeting with Chief (Mrs) Nike Davies-Okundaye, founder of Nike Art Gallery, at his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta.

“I visited Olumo Rock recently and realized we must restore it to its former glory,” Abiodun said. “Currently, the site receives about 20,000 visitors a year. We believe this number can grow tenfold with the right investment.”

As part of the revitalization, an existing events hall at the tourist centre will be converted into a permanent art gallery operated by Nike Art Gallery. The project is expected to be completed before the National Sports Festival in May, which will bring over 15,000 visitors to the state.

“I instructed that the hall be shut down and redesigned as a permanent exhibition space,” Abiodun noted, adding that the upgraded site will showcase Ogun’s rich cultural heritage, including the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the Ransome-Kuti family home, and the renowned Adire market.

The governor also highlighted improved access to the state through enhanced road networks, rail, air, and, soon, sea transport. “We’ve built one of the best airports in Nigeria and are committed to making Ogun a leading tourism destination,” he said.

Davies-Okundaye praised the governor’s vision and expressed confidence in the project’s global appeal. “The gallery will attract international dignitaries. Our Abuja location has welcomed over ten heads of state — the same will happen here,” she said.

She also lauded the state’s continued support for the Adire fabric industry. “Adire has deep roots in Ogun, and with over 50 years of promotion, it remains a unique cultural asset we can proudly present to the world,” she said.

Governor Abiodun reiterated his administration’s commitment to the creative sector, citing initiatives like the Adire Ogun Digital Marketplace, mandatory Adire attire for government functions, and provision of solar-powered equipment for artisans.

He also revealed plans to launch a creative arts and entertainment village in partnership with renowned producer Bolanle Austen-Peters, slated for completion within two months.
