Bolaji Idowu, the lead pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre, has urged individuals to avoid entering romantic relationships while unemployed, warning that financial instability can cloud judgment and lead to poor decisions.
In a sermon that recently gained attention on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Pastor Idowu highlighted the risks of making emotional commitments during periods of financial hardship. According to him, being jobless can severely limit one’s choices and may lead individuals to settle for relationships they would not consider under more stable circumstances.
“Don’t date when you are jobless,” he stated. “There are some relationships that seem attractive not because they truly are, but because you have no money. When you have your own money, you’ll realize you never should have fallen in love with certain people. It wasn’t love, it was hunger.”
He further cautioned against making major life decisions while under financial pressure, describing it as a setup for undesirable outcomes. “Never negotiate on an empty stomach, you’ll get a bad deal. That’s what I call the crumbs mentality: when you’re poor, small things satisfy you easily. You settle for less too quickly.”
Pastor Idowu concluded by encouraging his audience to adopt a mindset of abundance and expand their aspirations beyond immediate needs. “Shift your thinking. Think in abundance,” he said. “I meet people whose highest ambition is to travel to America. How can that be a life goal?”
