Controversial Nigerian hip-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has avoided a three-month prison sentence after paying a N30,000 fine imposed by an Ogun State Magistrates’ Court.

Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo of the Ifo Magistrate Court convicted the singer on two counts conspiracy and assault related to an incident that occurred on November 18, 2022, in the Okeosa area of Ilogbo.

According to Police Prosecutor Inspector Olumide Awoleke, Portable and others still at large were accused of conspiring to assault and unlawfully beating one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi.

The charge sheet also alleged that Portable stole music equipment, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, an interface cable, and an AKG P420 microphone.

The court sentenced Portable to one month in prison or a N10,000 fine for conspiracy and two months or a N20,000 fine for assault. The singer opted to pay the fines, thereby avoiding incarceration.

Portable was initially arraigned in April 2023 under case number MIF/192C/2023 but failed to appear for subsequent hearings, resulting in his temporary remand. He returned to court last Thursday, and judgment was delivered on Tuesday.
