Chelsea are on the verge of securing the signature of promising young striker Liam Delap, with only final formalities remaining on a long-term deal valued at £30 million.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Thursday that Chelsea are prepared to activate Delap’s release clause, with negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives nearing completion.
The deal is expected to be finalised in time for Delap to join Chelsea’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States later this month.
Romano stated: “Chelsea are closing in on Liam Delap deal as details of the long-term contract are being completed with his agents. Enzo Maresca’s appreciation and the promise of UEFA Champions League football made the difference as Chelsea are set to activate the £30m release clause. #CFC now await formal confirmation.”
Delap, who netted 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances under Kieran McKenna last season, reportedly chose Chelsea over a potential return to Manchester City. Despite having a £40 million buy-back clause, City opted not to re-sign the striker following Ipswich Town’s relegation.
New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca and the opportunity to play Champions League football were key factors in Delap’s decision to move to Stamford Bridge.
