Tragedy struck the Ogun State media community on Monday as Bukola Agbakaizu, a respected broadcaster with Ogun State Television (OGTV), collapsed and died while preparing for her afternoon shift at the station’s Abeokuta headquarters.
Her death was confirmed by Mr. Bunmi Adigun, Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council. Agbakaizu, aged 52, was a former ex-officio member of the council and known for her unwavering dedication to the journalism profession.
According to a statement from the NUJ, “Bukola Agbakaizu, a committed member of OGTV, collapsed while preparing for duty and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Federal Medical Centre. She was a passionate journalist and former Vice Chairman of the OGTV Chapel under the leadership of Wale Olanrewaju.”
Her passing has left a significant void in the media landscape, as colleagues remember her vibrant personality, professionalism, and years of service. She is survived by her two children, elderly mother, and a host of grieving friends and colleagues.
The Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) also expressed deep sorrow over her sudden death. In a statement, NAWOJ Chairperson, Sekinat Salam, described Agbakaizu as a consummate professional and a pillar of strength within the association.
“The news of Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu’s passing came as a rude shock. Her dedication, experience, and leadership were invaluable. Her death is a painful loss not just to OGTV, but to journalism in Ogun State,” Salam said.
“She was a devoted member of NUJ and NAWOJ, whose compassion and commitment will always be remembered. Though she left us at 52, her legacy of service and faith will remain with us.”
NAWOJ prayed for the repose of her soul and for divine comfort for her family and loved ones.
