As part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of retirees, the Oyo State Government has disclosed that it pays N60 million monthly to reduce outstanding pension arrears.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Oyo State Pension Board, Tunji Adekunle, in a statement released on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan.
According to Adekunle, a total of 22,212 pensioners were on the state’s payroll as of April 2025. He affirmed that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde remains committed to prioritizing the well-being of retirees.
He noted that pensions have been consistently paid on or before the 25th of every month, alongside salaries for active public servants, since Makinde assumed office.
Highlighting the state’s efforts to include more retirees, Adekunle stated that the board has continued enrolling new pensioners regularly. “Between January and April 2025, the board enrolled 142 pensioners in January, 175 in February, 171 in March, and 143 in April,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary of the Pension Board, Hammed Bello, also praised the governor for his consistent support of pensioners. He noted that the regular payment of entitlements has brought significant relief to retirees and reinforced their confidence in the government.
Bello reaffirmed the board’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ongoing improvements in pension administration across the state.
