A major political shake-up may be on the horizon as the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) signals openness to aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that could reshape Nigeria’s political terrain ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the center of this development is NNPP’s national leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. With mounting speculation over his possible defection to the APC, party leaders are publicly reaffirming their loyalty to him.
Speaking to DAILY POST, Kano NNPP Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa declared that the party would follow Kwankwaso wherever he goes even into the APC if it serves the national interest.
“Kwankwaso is more than a politician; he is a movement. His influence in the North is unrivaled,” Dungurawa said. “If joining APC is necessary to fix Nigeria’s leadership crisis, we’re behind him.”
Dungurawa pointed to Kwankwaso’s track record as a former Minister of Defence, Senator, and two-term governor, describing him as a proven leader with national relevance.
“When he was Defence Minister, there was relative peace, even in conflict zones like Sudan,” he added. “If APC is ready to bring him in to help rebuild the country, we support that fully.”
Rumors have intensified about Kwankwaso potentially being tapped as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in 2027, although the Presidency has yet to comment. Sources say behind-the-scenes negotiations are already underway.
Adding fuel to the speculation, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje a former Kano governor and long-time rival of Kwankwaso has reportedly stepped down. Party insiders claim Ganduje’s resignation is part of a broader strategy to ease Kwankwaso’s integration into the party.
“Ganduje made it clear he wouldn’t work with Kwankwaso,” a source told DAILY POST. “For the APC’s 2027 game plan, his resignation was necessary.”
Ganduje’s appointment was initially seen as a counterbalance to Kwankwaso’s growing influence in Kano. But internal divisions and a weak 2023 showing left the APC fractured in the state.
With 2027 fast approaching, attention now turns to Kwankwaso and the political realignments his next move may ignite.
