Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the renaming of two major sports institutions in honour of the 22 state athletes who lost their lives in a fatal road accident in May while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammed.

The tragic incident occurred just five kilometres from Kano city as the state’s contingent was making its way back from the national event.

Governor Yusuf described the athletes as heroes who brought pride to Kano and made significant contributions to the state’s sporting achievements.

“To honour their sacrifices, the Kano State Sports Institute will now be known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute, and the Kano State Sports Commission has been renamed the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission,” he stated.

He further assured that the state government would support the families left behind. “We will provide educational support for their children and initiate empowerment programmes for their widows. Parents of the unmarried victims will also benefit from our empowerment initiatives,” the governor said.

Governor Yusuf also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her support, following her donation of ₦110 million to the families of the deceased to help alleviate their suffering.
