Just days after Nigerian hairstylist Ifeoluwa Akinwunmi was arrested in India for allegedly possessing drugs worth over N1.8 billion, another Nigerian citizen, identified as Chikuwuma, has been apprehended for a similar crime.
According to a Tuesday report by India Today, officers from Bengaluru’s Central Crime Branch arrested Chikuwuma during a raid in which narcotics worth about Rs 1.2 crore (approximately N214 million) were recovered.
“The accused, identified as Chikuwuma, was caught by the police during an attempt to distribute narcotics within the Avalahalli area of northern Bengaluru,” the report stated.
The arrest was part of a wider crackdown led by the CCB’s Narcotics Wing, which reportedly led to the confiscation of MDMA and crystal substances.
The report further stated that the Narcotics Wing of the CCB conducted a quick, coordinated operation, seizing MDMA and crystal substances valued at over Rs 1.2 crore.
Authorities added, “He was caught red-handed while trying to sell narcotics and is believed to be part of a wider international trafficking network. Efforts are ongoing to trace others involved.”
Initial findings by investigators indicated that Chikuwuma had been engaged in drug trafficking activities since 2013.
He allegedly brought narcotics into India from abroad and distributed them throughout various parts of Bengaluru, especially in suburban areas.
The investigation also linked his operations to a broader transnational drug syndicate. Before his arrest, he had reportedly been under police watch for several weeks.
The report mentioned that officials are ramping up efforts to dismantle the entire network and identify additional suspects involved in the case.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Chikuwuma is currently being held in custody as police continue questioning him to assist their ongoing investigation.
This arrest adds to the growing number of Nigerian citizens currently facing legal action in India over drug-related offences.
