The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, was notably absent from this year’s Ojude Oba Festival, held on Sunday in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Traditionally celebrated three days after Eid-el-Kabir, the Ojude Oba Festival is a vibrant display of Ijebu heritage, featuring colorful parades, horse riding, traditional music, and elegant attire. It also serves as a significant occasion for the Ijebu people to honor their monarch.
For decades, Oba Adetona has been the centerpiece of the event, presiding over festivities from his royal seat.
However, in a break from custom, the 91-year-old monarch was represented this year by his wife, Olori Kemi Adetona.
Although no formal statement has been released regarding his absence, palace insiders attributed it to the king’s advanced age.
They stressed that while the Awujale remains in good health, he is gradually reducing public appearances due to age-related limitations.
A senior government official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the monarch’s absence was not due to illness but rather his declining mobility and energy levels.
Efforts to reach the 2025 Ojude Oba Festival Coordinator, Fassy Yusuf, were unsuccessful. Calls were unanswered, and messages had not been returned as of Monday.
