The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commended President Bola Tinubu, the Supreme Court, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for their efforts in safeguarding democratic principles in Nigeria.

In a statement released Friday by his media aide, Kelvin Loveday-Egbo, PDP acting chairman George Turnah described their actions in 2025 as “bold, courageous, and vital to the preservation of democracy.”

Turnah also extended praise to 27 lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly, PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and South-South Zonal Chairman Chief Dan Orbih for their “unwavering stance against undemocratic practices.”

He hailed President Tinubu as “a beacon of courage” for his leadership amid political unrest in Rivers State. Turnah said Tinubu’s resolve became especially significant following the Supreme Court’s declaration that democratic governance in the state had broken down.

“His steadfast courage in the face of adversity, coupled with bold political will, has been crucial,” Turnah said. “President Tinubu’s commitment reminds us of the integrity and responsibility that true leadership demands.”

He also praised the Supreme Court for its impartiality and strength, particularly in countering what he described as Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s undemocratic actions.

“The court’s determination in confronting Governor Fubara’s excesses has reinforced essential checks and balances,” Turnah noted, adding that labeling the governor a despot was a strong stand for justice.

On Wike, Turnah described the FCT minister as a consistent advocate for democratic accountability, both within Rivers State and the PDP at large.

“His unrelenting efforts symbolize a fight for transparent governance,” he said. “Wike embodies the public’s call for a return to democratic integrity.”

The 27 pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers Assembly were lauded for their resistance to Fubara’s administration, which Turnah said came at significant personal and political cost.

He also acknowledged Senator Anyanwu’s legal challenge to his removal as PDP National Secretary and Chief Orbih’s pushback against efforts by some governors to dominate the party’s South-South leadership.

“Their bravery in the face of overwhelming opposition speaks volumes about their commitment to democracy,” Turnah concluded.
