The long-standing political tension between Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, appears to have been resolved.

Reports indicate that the fallout between the two leaders, which emerged a few months after the 2023 general elections, stemmed from a struggle for control over the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in Benue State. The disagreement caused a noticeable division within the party.

However, the reconciliation process gained momentum during President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue following the tragic Yelwata attacks that claimed the lives of over 200 residents. During his visit, President Tinubu, alongside Akume, met with traditional rulers who emphasized the urgent need for peace in the state.

Governor Alia, on Wednesday, confirmed that he visited Akume at his residence in Maitama, Abuja. Sharing the update on his official Facebook page, Alia wrote:

“Today, I paid a surprise visit to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), at his Maitama residence in Abuja.
“It was a warm and insightful interaction marked by mutual respect, unity, and deep reflection on both state and national issues, as well as a shared commitment to the progress of our dear state and nation.”

The meeting marks a significant step toward unity within the Benue APC and signals a renewed collaboration between the governor and his political mentor.
