As violence escalates in Benue State, former Senate President David Mark has warned that residents may be compelled to take up self-defence if authorities fail to stop the ongoing attacks.
In a statement issued on Sunday through his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the spate of killings as “senseless, tragic, and unacceptable,” noting that the security situation has worsened beyond what citizens can endure.
“The government must fulfill its responsibility, or risk pushing the people to defend themselves,” he stated.
Mark expressed deep concern over the continued loss of lives and destruction of property, reiterating that the protection of citizens remains the government’s primary constitutional duty.
He called on both the federal and Benue State governments to act swiftly and decisively to stem the violence, urging Governor Hyacinth Alia to step up efforts to restore law and order. He also appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to work closely with security agencies in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
“This is a difficult period for our people. We must come together, speak with one voice, and refuse to be intimidated,” Mark said, pledging his solidarity with affected communities.
Despite the ongoing attacks, he urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual support in the face of adversity.
“Even in these trying times, we must uphold our values and stay united,” he concluded.
