Maignan

Chelsea have initiated contact with AC Milan over a potential deal to sign goalkeeper Mike Maignan, according to recent reports.

The 29-year-old French international has just one year left on his contract at San Siro, putting Milan in a position where they may be forced to sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2026. Although Maignan was previously expected to extend his stay, Milan’s failure to secure European qualification has raised doubts about his future and added financial pressure on the club.

Chelsea have already planned a thorough evaluation of their goalkeeping department during the summer, with the Club World Cup earmarked as a testing ground for current options like Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, and promising academy talent Mike Penders.

However, Maignan’s potential availability has prompted the club to reconsider its timeline. Should a deal be validated and go through, the shot stopper would be expected to become the first-choice goalkeeper, casting uncertainty over Robert Sanchez’s role at the club.

Meanwhile, Djordje Petrovic who is fresh from an impressive season on loan at Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg, where he was named Player of the Season is also pushing for a starting spot. His return comes with a salary increase, and sources suggest his updated contract includes a release clause that could ease a future departure.

Filip Jorgensen, signed for £20 million last summer, is likely to stay and provide depth in the squad.

Chelsea are also keeping eye on Burnley’s James Trafford, though Newcastle United are currently leading the chase for the England U21 international goalkeeper.
