Chelsea have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon for a reported fee of £18 million ($25 million), the club confirmed on Monday.

The 20-year-old joins the Blues following a loan spell at Spanish side Las Palmas, who were relegated from La Liga last season. Essugo will be eligible to feature for Chelsea in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup later this month.

A product of Sporting’s renowned academy, Essugo made history in March 2021 by becoming the club’s youngest-ever first-team debutant at just 16 years old.

The deal for Essugo, along with fellow Sporting prospect Geovany Quenda, was initially agreed in March. Quenda, however, will remain with the Portuguese club until the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, before completing a £44 million move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are also looking to further strengthen their squad, with a £30 million move for Ipswich striker Liam Delap reportedly nearing completion.
