Edo State has confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria, with health officials reporting two fatalities linked to the disease.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, during an emergency meeting held in Benin City on Tuesday.
The confirmation came after the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) diagnosed five cases of the infection, two of which resulted in death.
In response, state health authorities convened a crisis meeting with partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and other relevant agencies to strengthen the public health response.
Dr. Oshiomhole described the situation as serious, noting that diphtheria is a contagious bacterial illness that primarily affects the respiratory system and can be deadly if not promptly treated.
He highlighted the growing threat of drug resistance and concurrent infections, calling for immediate and coordinated intervention.
He said the state has activated a rapid response strategy, which includes enhanced disease surveillance, improved case tracking, and better coordination between health agencies.
Efforts are also being made to boost public awareness and ensure the availability of vaccines.
The commissioner praised UBTH for its quick action in diagnosing and managing the cases.
He also acknowledged the support being received from national and international health partners.
To reduce the risk of further spread, residents were urged to seek medical help if they experience symptoms such as sore throat, fever, or breathing issues.
People were also advised to avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of illness.
Dr. Oshiomhole assured the public that the government is taking necessary steps to curb the outbreak.
“There is no need to panic,” he said. “What we need now is accurate information, vigilance, and collective responsibility.”
