Amid growing concerns over the quality of education in public schools, stakeholders have called on the Osun State Government to immediately commence the recruitment of qualified teachers and address the existing shortage affecting the state’s educational system.
The appeal follows months of delay after the government’s announcement in February 2024 that it had approved the recruitment of 5,000 teachers to strengthen public schools across the state. Despite this, many of the shortlisted candidates are still awaiting appointment letters.
Education advocates have stressed the urgency of filling vacant teaching positions to avoid further disruption to students’ academic progress. They noted that the shortage of teachers, especially in core subjects, has resulted in overcrowded classrooms and excessive workloads for existing teaching staff.
“The government should urgently prioritize the appointment of qualified candidates to ensure learning in our schools continues unhindered,” one stakeholder said. “Those already shortlisted should receive their appointment letters without further delay.”
Observers argue that the delay not only affects students’ academic outcomes but also demoralizes candidates who have met the necessary qualifications and have been waiting to serve.
“The time for Osun State Government to recruit teachers is now. There is no more room for excuses,” another education advocate stated.
Calls have also been made for the recruitment process to be transparent and fair, giving all qualified applicants an equal opportunity to contribute to the state’s development through education.
In addition to fast-tracking the distribution of appointment letters, stakeholders are urging the government to consider increasing the number of teachers to be hired, in line with the identified needs across various schools.
The current shortage, they warned, if not urgently addressed, could jeopardize the future of thousands of students in the state.
