Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi has signed a new contract extension with Nottingham Forest, committing his future to the club until 2028, Insight Media Sports Arena reports.
The 26-year-old striker’s fresh three-year deal puts an end to ongoing speculation over his future, following a difficult 2024/25 season marred by injuries and limited playing time.
Awoniyi expressed deep appreciation to the club for their unwavering support during his recovery from a serious abdominal injury sustained in a May clash against Leicester City. The injury required emergency surgery and led to a medically induced coma. Now on the path to full recovery, the Super Eagles star sees the new contract as a renewed source of inspiration.
“This new contract is a fresh motivation for me,” Awoniyi said. “I want to give back to the club and the fans who stood by me throughout my recovery journey.”
Club officials hailed Awoniyi’s resilience and affirmed that the extension underlines his importance to the team’s long-term plans.
The renewal comes as Nottingham Forest gears up for their return to European football after qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League for the 2025/26 season after a strong Premier League finish under head coach Nuno Espírito Santo.
Awoniyi originally joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022 for a then club-record fee of £17 million. He made an instant impact, playing a key role in helping the club retain its Premier League status in their first top-flight season back.
Despite a promising start, the 2024/25 campaign proved challenging for the forward, who scored just once and was limited to 893 minutes of Premier League football. However, he has tallied 17 goals in 72 league appearances since his arrival, with several of his strikes proving crucial in high-stakes matches.
Forest officials remain confident that Awoniyi can return to peak form and contribute significantly in the upcoming season, especially with the club’s European ambitions now in play.
The striker’s extension follows the club’s confirmation in June that fellow Nigerian and full-back Ola Aina will also remain at the City Ground next season.
