A farmer named Kabiru Kamba has shared the extraordinary story of how he rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Kamba narrated the incident when he received a team of the state’s Technical Working Group, of the Gender-Based Violence in his residence in Kamba town, Dandi LGA on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the team was led by the former Permanent Secretary, State Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani.

According to Kamba, the discovery occurred on Friday when he arrived at his farm and noticed a strange ridge among the others on his land.

“Out of curiosity, I flagged down some motorcyclists to help dig.”

“While digging the ridge, we found a wrapper buried in the soil, which raised my suspicion.”

“I immediately informed the police at a nearby checkpoint, who came and dug further, only to discover a baby girl, miraculously alive and crying, shrouded in a piece of textile,” he explained.

Speaking on taking responsibility for the child, Kamba said he acted purely out of compassion and humanity.

“In such situations, it is only normal to help.”

“I was moved to care for her and requested her custody.”

“The baby was handed over to me by the Dandi local government council, pending conclusion of police investigations.”

“I didn’t expect anything in return; it’s simply a humanitarian act, and coincidentally, my wife had just given birth; so breastfeeding the baby has not been a challenge.”

“In fact, we have planned her naming ceremony for Wednesday, and I have already bought a ram and other essential requisites for the event.”

“By Allah’s will, she will be named then,” he stated.

Kamba’s wife also expressed joy in accepting the child into their family.

“I felt perfectly fine and happy when my husband told me. I will take care of her just the way I will do to my own,” she said.

Responding on behalf of the visiting delegation, Hammani assured the family that their observations and the heroic effort of the rescuer would be reported to the Wife of the Governor, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further consideration.

The Secretary of the TWG, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, emphasized that the visit was aimed at showing solidarity, offering prayers in gratitude for the baby’s survival, and acknowledging the brave and selfless actions of Kamba.

He also reiterated the group’s support and praised the Nigeria Police for promptly initiating an investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the delegation donated various essential supplies for the baby’s care, including baby clothes, soap, diapers, a bed, detergent, powdered milk, a mosquito net, and a mattress.
