Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, held a closed-door meeting in Abuja with Martins Amaewhule, the suspended Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and several lawmakers a move seen as a major step toward resolving the state’s long-running political crisis.

Sources close to the meeting described it as cordial and productive. Fubara and Amaewhule were seen smiling, sharing a light moment, and holding hands a symbolic gesture that suggests tensions may finally be easing.

“The suspended governor is determined to make peace. He has now begun genuine engagement,” a source told The Cable.

This meeting marks the first direct reconciliation effort between Fubara and the lawmakers since the crisis erupted.

The political turmoil reached a peak when Fubara was suspended on March 19, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The National Assembly endorsed the decision, and retired Vice-Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas was appointed as interim administrator for six months.

Although Fubara had previously engaged with President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, political insiders view this face-to-face with the Assembly members as the most meaningful peace overture to date.

Wike had earlier stressed that any real reconciliation would require Fubara to personally reach out to the aggrieved lawmakers, who have reportedly gone without salaries for over two years.
