A windstorm has wreaked havoc at the National Youth Service Corps temporary orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, damaging key infrastructure and exposing corps members to harsh weather conditions.

The Gombe State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Chinwe Nwachuku, who disclosed this on Friday during the swearing-in of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members, appealed to Governor Muhammadu Yahaya for urgent intervention.

She said the storm struck on Tuesday and tore off the roof of the camp’s multi-purpose pavilion, a major venue for corps activities, and left several hostels leaking or completely open.

“This pavilion serves as a vital hub for our activities and it has been severely blown off. Some rooms are not just leaking but are open,” Nwachuku said, expressing concern over the safety and welfare of the corps members.

Nwachuku said the destruction had left the corps members fearful of what might happen if it should rain again.

A total of 1,629 corps members, comprising 893 males and 736 females, took the oath of allegiance administered by Justice Zainab Abdulkadir on behalf of the State Chief Judge, Justice Halima Mohammed, at the ceremony.

Governor Yahaya, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Manassah Jatau, assured the corps members that their welfare would remain a top priority, urging them to integrate into their host communities.

“Your own tradition, culture and norms are not general beliefs; adapt to the culture of your environment,” he said.
