Mason Greenwood has been spotted back in Manchester for a training session alongside former Manchester United youth team-mate D’Mani Mellor, following a key decision by Marseille regarding his future.

Greenwood, 23, joined the French club permanently in 2024 for £26.6 million and enjoyed a standout debut season, netting 22 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. His impressive form played a crucial role in helping Marseille secure a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

During the summer break, Greenwood returned to familiar surroundings to stay in shape, training at a local Manchester facility. He was joined by Mellor, who also came through the United academy but took a different path after leaving Old Trafford in 2022. Mellor now plays for non-league side Macclesfield FC, managed by former footballer Robbie Savage.

The two previously shared the pitch during a Europa League match against Astana in 2019, Greenwood started and Mellor came off the bench to replace Tahith Chong.

Despite ongoing transfer rumours, Marseille have made it clear they plan to keep Greenwood for at least another season. The club posted on social media, “Looking forward to more, Mason,” signaling their intent to retain the striker for their Champions League campaign.

Greenwood, speaking back in May, expressed his desire to stay, saying:
“I hope to be here next year to play in the Champions League. Some players tell me that playing in the Champions League here is something special. It was a very positive season. We achieved all our goals.”

As Marseille prepare for pre-season training under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, Greenwood is focused on maintaining his fitness to hit the ground running. The club has scheduled friendlies against Al-Jazira and Valencia on July 26 and 29 as part of their build-up to the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season.
