Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has officially declared the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State vacant.
The decision comes after the passing of former Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Onanuga, who died on January 15, 2025, following a brief illness.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Speaker said the declaration was made in accordance with Section 68(2) of the amended 1999 Constitution.
Following this announcement, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is now expected to set a date for bye-elections to fill vacant seats in both the state and National Assemblies.
Currently, there are five vacant seats in the House of Representatives — four due to the deaths of lawmakers and one in Oredo Federal Constituency, Edo State, where Dennis Idahosa has taken office as the state’s deputy governor.
