Renowned Ibadan-based radio broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, has publicly distanced himself from the fast-spreading political slogan “Oyo n pe o” which translates to “Oyo is calling you” amid mounting speculation that he may run for office in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session on Monday, the Agidigbo 88.7 FM CEO clarified that he neither initiated the slogan nor has he made any formal political declaration, urging politicians to stop targeting him with unwarranted criticism.

“They don’t want to see a radio presenter in politics. They don’t believe media professionals can lead,” Hamzat said. “If the people of Oyo are truly calling me, why should I be the one to decide the position—be it senator, representative, or governor? Why the fear? Why the attacks?”

Hamzat emphasized that while he hasn’t declared an interest in contesting any position, he recognizes that a significant number of people are looking to him for leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I’ve never said I’m contesting. But the people are ready. Unlike others, I haven’t abandoned my media duties to campaign. Still, many are waiting to hear from me before they make political decisions. If I contest and win, that’s fine. If I lose, that’s also fine. But trying to discourage me won’t work.”

He accused certain political figures of orchestrating the smear campaign against him out of fear of his grassroots popularity and influence.

“These attacks are coming from politicians who shut the door on my grassroots ally. They want to keep recycling their chosen candidates, and the public is fed up with that. If the people genuinely want me to run, no one can stop it.”

Posters with the tagline “2027 Oyo n pe o” and Hamzat’s silhouette have recently appeared around Ibadan, fueling speculation about a potential gubernatorial campaign—though Hamzat has made no formal announcement.

Responding to a critic who warned him not to depend on public sentiment, Hamzat reaffirmed his belief in the people’s voice.

“The slogan is coming from the people, not me. If they say they want me, I’ll answer that call.”

The viral slogan and campaign-style posters have intensified discussions around Hamzat’s political future, particularly regarding a possible bid for the Oyo State governorship. While skeptics question whether his popularity in the media space can translate to political capital, Hamzat remains unshaken.

“Don’t let anyone mislead you. I’m not afraid of entering politics. If I choose to contest, it’s not a do-or-die affair. Let’s wait and see what happens.”
