Tension gripped Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State late Monday night after unknown gunmen attacked the office of the Onelga Security Peace and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), killing an officer of the State Intelligence Service (SIS).
The violent incident took place near the Local Government Council Secretariat in Ahoada, triggering panic as residents reported hearing heavy gunfire around 9 p.m. Many fled indoors, fearing for their safety.
The slain officer, identified as Corporal Friday Francis of the Special Intervention Squad, was reportedly caught in the crossfire and fatally shot near the secretariat’s perimeter fence. His death has intensified concerns over worsening insecurity in the area.
The attackers fled the scene before security reinforcements could arrive. While no group has claimed responsibility, authorities suspect the assault may be tied to ongoing cult-related violence in the region.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, visited the scene Tuesday morning. Addressing officers, he condemned the killing and described it as a direct attack on both local security structures and community peace.
“We must identify and apprehend those responsible,” the CP stated. “This is an attack on our collective safety. We will dismantle their operations and eliminate cult activities in this area. Anyone with credible information should come forward.”
In response, the police command has intensified patrols and surveillance across Ahoada and its environs, urging residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities.
An official investigation into the attack is currently ongoing.
