Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has urged Nigerians to keep faith in the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking at the Troost-Ekong Charity Match at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Monday, Yobo stressed that Nigeria’s fate in the qualifiers is far from decided.

Currently fourth in Group C with seven points from six games, the Eagles trail leaders South Africa by six points, with four matches left to play.

Yobo remains hopeful, insisting that Nigeria can still qualify if they win their remaining fixtures against Rwanda (home), South Africa (away), Lesotho (away), and Benin Republic (home).

“It’s a difficult position, but not impossible. We’ve overcome tough situations before,” Yobo said.

“The key is for the team to stay united and focus on winning playing well isn’t enough. Dropping points at this stage would end our chances.”

Having served as Assistant Coach, Yobo expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to handle the pressure. “I believe this team can rise to the occasion. Sometimes pressure brings out our best.”

On his own coaching future, Yobo admitted uncertainty and a lack of motivation for coaching roles at the moment.

“I’ve tried coaching but didn’t find it fulfilling. To attract more former players, coaching needs to be more appealing. For now, I’m concentrating on my personal projects.”

Reflecting on his career, Yobo fondly recalled his nine years at Everton FC. “My time at Goodison Park was defining. Although I missed the opening of the new stadium, I’m glad Everton is growing and creating new opportunities.”
