Barcelona have completed the signing of goalkeeper Joan Garcia from city rivals Espanyol for €26.34 million ($31 million), the club confirmed on Wednesday. The 24-year-old penned a six-year contract with the Catalan giants, becoming their first acquisition of the summer transfer window.
Garcia, who joined Espanyol as a teenager, impressed last season with eight clean sheets in 38 La Liga appearances, playing a crucial role in helping his side avoid relegation.
“Joan Garcia has just completed a fantastic campaign in La Liga, playing a key role in Espanyol’s survival,” Barcelona said in a statement. “His outstanding performances, combined with his exceptional potential at just 24 years old, made him a target for top clubs around the world, Barca included in a statement.”
Barcelona, who lifted four trophies last season under new manager Hansi Flick, including the La Liga title, see Garcia as a key addition to their squad depth.
Ahead of his move to club rival Barcelona, Garcia posted a farewell message to Espanyol supporters via social media on Tuesday. “I know this decision will not be easy for everyone to understand,” he said. “But it has been a very well thought-out decision, made with consideration for my career, the club, my family, and myself.”
Garcia will now compete with Marc-André ter Stegen, Wojciech Szczęsny, and Iñaki Peña for the number one spot at the Camp Nou.
