President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday held a crucial meeting with key political stakeholders from Rivers State at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in a bid to resolve the ongoing political crisis that has rocked the state in recent months.

In attendance at the closed-door meeting were the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule; and several members of the state legislature.

Although details of the discussions are yet to be officially disclosed, sources close to the presidency indicated that the meeting centered on efforts to find a lasting solution to the persistent tensions between Governor Fubara and his political godfather, Wike, which have polarized the state’s political landscape and paralyzed legislative activities.

The President was said to have appealed to all parties to prioritize peace and stability in the interest of the people of Rivers State, reiterating that political disagreements must not be allowed to undermine governance and public service delivery.

Recall that the crisis in Rivers State escalated in late 2023 following a rift between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike, leading to a division within the State Assembly and an attempt by lawmakers to impeach the governor. The tension has since drawn national attention, prompting earlier interventions by political leaders and traditional rulers, though without a conclusive resolution.

President Tinubu’s renewed intervention signals a high-level attempt to mediate and restore unity in the state ahead of key political events and developments in the country.

Further updates on the outcome of the meeting are expected in the coming hours.
