The Kano State Government has extended its heartfelt sympathy to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Farm Centre GSM Market, which occurred on Sallah day. The government also pledged to support the victims as they work to recover their losses.
In a statement released on Saturday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, the state Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, described the fire as a tragic blow not just to the affected traders, but to the broader economic landscape of the state.
The fire, which broke out at Dan Sulaika Plaza, one of the busiest areas in the market destroyed numerous shops and goods worth millions of naira. The affected traders primarily deal in mobile phones, accessories, and computer gadgets.
“This is a deeply saddening incident,” Gwarzo said. “Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is deeply concerned, and we stand in solidarity with all those who lost their means of livelihood.”
He assured the victims that the state government is fully committed to helping them recover and will explore every possible avenue to support them.
“The fire hit the heart of Kano’s commercial life, especially coming during Eid-el-Kabir, a peak period for business activities,” he said. “We will not abandon those affected. The government will ensure that support is provided to help them bounce back.”
The deputy governor also revealed that the Yusuf-led administration is taking steps to prevent such tragedies in the future. According to him, the government is reviewing fire safety regulations, building standards, and emergency response strategies across markets in the state.
“We are actively engaging stakeholders to improve fire safety and ensure our commercial centres are more resilient,” he said. “It is essential that market unions, traders’ associations, and other groups collaborate with the government to implement safety measures and raise awareness on fire prevention.”
The Farm Centre GSM Market, located in Tarauni Local Government Area, is a major commercial hub for technology and communication devices in Kano, attracting buyers from within and outside the state.
