Two construction workers lost their lives and another was seriously injured when part of the old fence at the Kwara Hotels site in Ilorin collapsed. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon while renovation work was ongoing at the popular hotel located in the GRA area of the state capital.

The hotel, once a symbol of Kwara State’s hospitality sector, is currently being renovated as part of a government infrastructure upgrade.

According to reports, the victims were rushed to a private hospital on Wahab Folawiyo Road (formerly Unity Road). Sadly, two of them were declared dead, while the third is receiving intensive treatment.

An eyewitness described the moment as terrifying, saying she was nearby when she suddenly heard a loud noise like an explosion, causing people to run in panic. It was later confirmed that the fence had collapsed.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Rafiu Ajakaye, confirmed the incident, calling it a sad event. He said the structure gave way during work, injuring three workers—two of whom later died. Their families have been informed, he added.

Ajakaye referred further questions to the contractor handling the renovation but confirmed the incident to some media houses.

When reporters visited the scene on Wednesday, the area had been sealed off and was under heavy security. No workers were seen on site, and officials declined to comment further, directing all questions to the government and project managers.

As of now, neither the construction company nor the engineers in charge have released a statement explaining what caused the collapse. The renovation, worth ₦17.8 billion, was awarded to Craneburg Construction Company in October 2023 and is expected to last two years.
