The Chairperson of Epe Local Government Area in Lagos State, Surah Animashaun, has announced the suspension of the installation of a new Olu of Epe following a dispute over the royal succession.

In an official letter addressed to the Grand Chief Imam of Epe on Tuesday, Animashaun also called off all Eid-al-Adha (Ileya) celebrations and Jumat prayers at the Epe Central Mosque and Eid Ground in Oke Balogun.

The suspension follows rising tensions after the death of the immediate past Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom, Oba Shefiu Adewale, on May 31, 2025. Two prominent chiefs, Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji have since laid claim to the throne, each reportedly conducting separate installation ceremonies.

Animashaun stated that both claims are currently invalid and warned that the disputed succession could lead to unrest.

“Sequel to the dual installation of the new Olu-Epe on June 2, 2025 which is legally null and void in light of the recent passing of Oba Shefiu Adewale, I am writing to inform your office that High Chiefs Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji, who are both parading themselves as the new Olu-Epe if Epe, are hereby suspended until further notice,” the statement read.

Citing potential security risks, public health concerns, and the need to maintain peace, Animashaun added:
“In view of unforeseen circumstances, the Eid-al-Adha and Jumat services at the Epe Central Mosque and Eid Ground, Oke Balogun, are hereby cancelled. Further updates will be communicated in due course.”

Oba Shefiu Adewale, who died at the age of 86, was confirmed dead by High Chief Odedeogboro Balogun of Epe Kingdom, Musiliu Adeniyi. The monarch was buried on the same day in accordance with local customs.

Before becoming king, Oba Adewale held the titles of Otun-Balogun and later Balogun, the third and second-highest chieftaincy titles in Epe, respectively.
