The Lagos State High Court will commence its annual vacation on July 21, marking the end of the 2024/2025 legal year of the state’s judiciary.
This was announced in a notice dated June 5, signed by the Chief Registrar of the court, Mr. Tajudeen Elias. According to the notice, the vacation will run until September 12.
The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, approved the vacation in line with Order 49, Rule 4(D) of the High Court of Lagos Civil Procedure Rules, 2019.
Despite the vacation, Elias clarified that the Criminal Division of the High Court will continue to sit. “Where a judge of the Criminal Division is on vacation, a vacation judge may be appointed to handle all pending criminal matters in that court,” he said.
He added that urgent matters may still be heard during the vacation period, provided they do not fall on Sundays or public holidays, and with the consent of all parties involved.
Applications for urgent hearings can be made by summons in chambers before the vacation judge or the judge handling the substantive case.
The 2025/2026 legal year is scheduled to begin on September 15, with the official new legal year service to be held on September 22.
