Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has firmly denied rumours suggesting he plans to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing such claims as “baseless and misleading.”
Speaking during a recent media chat, Mutfwang dismissed any notion of defection, stating clearly that no such discussions have taken place.
“I haven’t had that conversation with anyone,” he said. “The media has been rife with speculation, but nothing of the sort has happened.”
The rumours come amid a wave of defections by PDP leaders in other states, including Delta and Akwa Ibom. However, Governor Mutfwang stressed that Plateau remains steadfast in its support for the PDP.
“Plateau has consistently aligned with the PDP. The APC has never truly had a foothold here,” he asserted. “I say that with every sense of responsibility.”
He attributed the speculation to interest groups pushing personal agendas, noting that while some may be well-intentioned, they are simply misinformed.
Reflecting on the state’s political history, Mutfwang accused the APC of past electoral misconduct.
“In 2015, collation was suspended at 8 p.m. with plans to resume in the morning. But by 2 a.m., results were already announced. That alone speaks volumes,” he recalled.
He also claimed that in 2019, PDP candidate General Jeremiah Usaini was the rightful winner but was denied victory due to systemic irregularities.
The governor suggested that some APC leaders in Plateau lack credibility and seek legitimacy by associating with the PDP.
“Certain APC members are hoping to be validated by our integrity,” he said. “But Plateau politics doesn’t operate that way.”
Reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP, Mutfwang said his political future lies in the hands of God and the people of Plateau.
“My political journey is guided by divine will and the mandate of Plateau people. Wherever they go, I will follow,” he declared.
Addressing internal party challenges, especially the loss of legislative seats through court rulings, the governor acknowledged existing hurdles. However, as a member of the PDP’s national reconciliation committee, he expressed optimism.
“I remain a committed member of the PDP. And I’m confident that the party’s internal crisis will soon be resolved,” Mutfwang concluded.
