Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has spoken out against gender bias in Nigeria’s legal system, stating that many laws are structured to favour men at the expense of women.
In a recent interview on Arise TV, Henshaw criticized the societal and legal treatment of women in Nigeria, arguing that men are socially conditioned to view women as inferior.
“Nigerian men see women as less human,” she said. “Even our laws particularly the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act are skewed in favour of men. For instance, a man is still legally permitted to chastise his wife. Why?”
Henshaw emphasized the need for equality, referencing biblical creation to support her point. “God created woman from man’s side, not from under his feet. Women were made to stand beside men not beneath them to thrive, multiply, and grow together.”
Her remarks have sparked conversation about the need for legal reform and cultural change to promote gender equality in Nigeria.
