The Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue State, Mrs. Veronica Garba, has confirmed that corps members posted to crisis-prone areas have been relocated to family houses in Makurdi for their safety.
Garba shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.
She explained that once reports of the unrest reached them, the NYSC management immediately contacted the police, who facilitated the evacuation of corps members from the affected areas, including Yelewata and Daudu.
According to Garba, the evacuated corps members were promptly accommodated in various family houses and fellowships, such as the Nigeria Corpers Christian Fellowship (NCCF), the National Association of Catholic Corps Members (NACC), and the Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN).
“We do not joke with the safety of our corps members because we take them as our children so as soon as we heard about the crisis, we contacted the Commissioner of Police who detailed his officers to help us evacuate our corps members.
“We then did our head count and none was missing so we arranged with the heads of all the family houses and got them settled in Makurdi for now pending when the situation will improve,” she said.
Garba appealed to parents to remain calm and reassured them of their children’s safety.
She further stated that the relocation of high-ranking security officials to Benue would help improve the security situation in the affected areas.
“I am sure that the parents of our corps members have heard that all the security chiefs have moved to Benue, so they have no reason to fear.
“Above all, God, who is the safest security is everywhere; He is with your children too,” Garba said.
Meanwhile, NAN reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Makurdi on Wednesday, where he engaged with key stakeholders and instructed security agencies to beef up security in the troubled communities and apprehend those responsible for the attacks that resulted in multiple fatalities.
