Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has applauded the resignation of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing the move as both commendable and responsible.
In a statement shared Friday on X (formerly Twitter), Obi referred to Ganduje’s decision reportedly prompted by health concerns as “honourable,” urging other public office holders facing similar challenges to consider stepping aside in the national interest.
“By prioritizing his health and stepping down, Dr. Ganduje has made a wise and respectable choice,” Obi wrote. “When health impairs a leader’s ability to serve effectively, resignation becomes not just honourable but essential.”
Obi stressed the need for physically and mentally fit leaders, especially in light of Nigeria’s current socio-political challenges. He warned against the continued impact of medical tourism, absenteeism, and prolonged medical leaves among key officials.
“This should serve as a wake-up call to those whose health no longer permits them to lead. Nigeria cannot afford absentee leadership, especially given the urgency of our national issues,” he said.
The former governor also extended his best wishes to Ganduje, praying for his peace and fulfillment in retirement: “May God Almighty grant him good health and peace in this new phase of life.”
While official confirmation of Ganduje’s resignation is still limited, multiple reports indicate that he has vacated his office at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
Party sources suggest an acting national chairman will be appointed soon, ahead of the party’s convention scheduled for December 2025.
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad also acknowledged the development, noting that a national vice chairman is expected to assume interim leadership until a permanent replacement is elected.
