The Obidient Movement has put a hold on its fundraising efforts amid public concerns over its plan to organize a nationwide birthday rally for former presidential candidate Peter Obi on July 19.

According to earlier reports by PUNCH Online, the group planned to celebrate Obi’s 64th birthday with rallies held across Nigeria. To support the event financially, they opened four bank accounts overseen by Serah Ibrahim, Ezeokoli Blessing, and John Alor.

However, the fundraising drive sparked controversy, with questions raised about financial transparency, the necessity of the rally, and how the raised funds would be allocated.

In response to the backlash, the movement released a statement on Tuesday, signed by National Coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Director of Mobilisation Morris Monye, and Director of Strategic Communications Nana Kazaure.

They acknowledged the confusion caused by the donation accounts and apologized for the lack of clear communication.

“We recognize that sharing donation details without sufficient context caused confusion and concern. We take full responsibility and sincerely apologize,” the statement said.

The group announced it would suspend the fundraising campaign and encouraged supporters to focus on direct community aid instead.

The rally’s theme, “From Compassion to Purpose: Obidients in Action for a New Possible Nigeria,” aims to inspire reflection, civic participation, and renewed commitment to the movement’s core values.

Described as a “people-powered day of service, mobilisation, and political awakening,” the event is set to take place simultaneously across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Planned activities include feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, assisting vulnerable groups, and promoting political awareness.

A major focus of the rally is to advocate for electoral reforms via the #PassOurINECReform campaign, urging the National Assembly and relevant bodies to enhance Nigeria’s election system.

While motivated by Peter Obi’s principles, the movement stresses the rally is not merely a personal celebration but a collective call to tackle Nigeria’s challenges through empathy, accountability, and dedication to the common good.

They also committed to improving transparency and communication going forward.

“This rally is for every Nigerian who believes in the country’s potential and is ready to take action. It is a day for introspection and engagement—not just cheering or entertainment,” the statement concluded.
